World-wide economic, cultural, political and technological exchanges have been a constant
throughout human history. However, it is only relatively recently that these interactions have
been described and conceptualized as being part of a global process. Explain why this is the
case, highlighting the ways in which the current processes of globalisation are unique or
different from previous global interactions.

  1. Why and how has the global process described and conceptualized?
  2. What is the difference between the current processes of globalisation and previous global interactions?

  • What is the uniqueness of the current processes of globalisation?

  1. Why the global process has been described and conceptualized?
  2. What is the uniqueness of the current processes of globalisation?

The central paradox of globalisation is, perhaps, that it has made the world both larger and smaller at the same time. It has become smaller in the sense that it is possible to travel anywhere in less than 24 hours, and that it is practically possible to have the same lifestyle anywhere in the world. On the other hand, it has become larger in the sense that we thereby know more about remote and 'exotic' places, and thus more easily recognise our mutual differences (Eriksen 2001,p.307).
a movement towards integration into ever larger systems (Eriksen 2001,p.307).
the word 'modernity' we refer to everything that capitalism, the modern state and individualism mean to human existence, modernity has been hegemonic in the world at least since the First World War (Eriksen 2001, p.297).
Modern communication technology contributes in two ways to the disengaging of cultural phenomena from space. First, a multitude of phenomena - including aspects of 'youth culture' (Eriksen 2001, p.297).

Second, the jet plane has made it possible for a growing number of people to move rapidly and comfortably all over the world (Eriksen 2001, p.297).

One consequence of increasing systemic integration at a global level is the fact that certain political issues affect the entire planet (Eriksen 2001, p.298).

People's lives are neither wholly global nor wholly local - they are glocal (Eriksen 2001, p.302).

Eriksen p.308

new cultural forms and social projects are continuously developed in local settings all over the world (Eriksen 2001, p.311).
